本研究从认知语言学角度出发,探讨具有不同文化背景的人对英语
谚语的理解过程,并分析了该理解过程中的认知作用问题。与传统观点
相反,本研究赞同Lakoff的观点:谚语理解是一个直接自动的解码过
程,而不是从字面意思到隐喻的间接转换过程。因此,本研究拟回答下
列三个研究问题1.谚语理解是一个自动生成过程还是一个从字面意义
到隐喻的转换过程?其间概念映射是如何发挥作用的?2.认知过程在
隐喻谚语和转喻谚语中的工作机制是否相同?二者之间有无区别?3.
认知观是如何帮助人们理解谚语的文化共性和特性的?
本研究采用实证研究方法,对Lakoff等人提出的谚语理解理论进
行验证的研究。实证分析语料主要来自google.com,《英语谚语集锦》,
和《英汉谚语与文化》两本书。语料分析步骤为:将所收集到的160余
条谚语进行系统筛选、分类、编码。编码分为开放式(open coding)和
主轴式(axial coding)两类。即:将所收集的语料在宽泛分类的基础
上再进行详细的相关分类。然后在以下两个理论框架中对编码语料进行
定性和定量分析:1.运用Lakoff的“理想认知模式(ICM)”和
Gibbs的“概念隐喻假设(CMH)”,探究在隐喻和转喻两种谚语理解中
所涉及的认知机制类属级结构(generic-level structure)和概念映
射(conceptual mapping)。2.检验Lakoff和Turner提出的“大链
接隐喻理论(GCMT)”,在特定文化背景下对谚语理解的解释能力,并
试图阐释人们在完全不同的文化背景下仍能对英语谚语的理解达成共
识的原因。
研究发现如下:1.谚语理解的认知过程是直接的、自动的,而非
间接转换的;2.认知过程在隐喻和转喻两种谚语理解之间的确有不同
之处;3.在不同文化背景下人类认知的共同性是谚语理解的关键;4.
谚语的正确使用依附一定的场合条件,其原因是人们选择使用谚语的理
由及因素有差异。
在结论中,本文在宏观及微观两个层面上对以后研究提出了几点启
示,同时也指出了该研究的局限性。
