Abstract
With the rapid development of globalization and frequent exchange, English has become very important that many parents ask their children to learn it even from younger age. For Chinese students, English has become a main subject in their study. However, teachers often find some unmotivated students who are unable to learn English well. How to motivate these students to learn English well is the main common issue met by all English teachers and it is the main reason why we do this research. This paper shows that there are many factors that affect students’ English learning, among them motivation is an important one. Motivation often can be described in many types, and the main broad categories are extrinsic motivation and intrinsic motivation. According to extrinsic motivation, the author suggests three ways to motivate middle school students in English learning: using reward appropriately, using competition and cooperation, creating a positive and relaxed learning climate. Based on intrinsic motivation, the author also gives three suggestions: providing opportunities for students to experience success, using active attribution strategies, using students’ curiosity. In short, since many middle school students lack motivation, English teachers have duty to find some effective ways to motive students in English learning. The author hopes that this study can benefit both English teachers and learners and spark more research in education area in the future.

摘 要
随着全球化快速发展和频繁的交流,英语已经变得非常重要,许多父母要求他们的孩子从很小的时候就开始学习英语。对于中国学生来说,英语已经成为他们的一门主要科目。然而,老师们经常发现一些没有动力的学生无法学好英语。如何激发这些学生学好英语是很多英语教师面临的共同课题,这也是我们研究此课题的主要原因。此项研究指出有很多因素影响学生学习英语,其中动机是一个重要因素。动机通常可以分为许多类型,主要两大类是外在与内在动机。根据外在动机的原理,笔者提出了三种建议来激发中学生学习英语:使用适当的奖励;使用竞争与合作;营造一个积极向上的学习氛围。基于内在动机的原理,笔者也提出了三种建议:提供机会给学生体验成功;使用归因战略;利用学生的好奇心。简而言之,因为许多中学生缺乏学习英语的动力,因此英语教师有责任寻找一些行之有效的方法帮助学生学习英语。作者希望本研究能让英语教师与学习者都受益和引发将来其再教育领域更深的探讨。
