Introduction
Language is the carrier of culture. The relationship between language and culture has been studied for years. Malinowski, an anthropologist, introduced the term context of situation. He used the term context of situation to refer to the total environment of the text, including the verbal environment, and the situation in which the text was uttered. According to his theory, two things have to be considered: context of culture, i.e., the social culture in which the speaker or writer lives-the total cultural background, and context of situation by which he meant the environment or what was happening at the verbal action. These two contexts play a part in the interpretation of meaning. Besides Malinowski, many other overseas linguists studied the context and made different achievements; however, almost all linguists agree that language is deeply influenced by culture.
In China, the study of context also lasts for many years. Chen Wang-dao, one of the Chinese linguists, has put forward his research finding in Development of Rhetoric, in which he states six elements influence the application of rhetoric, these elements are: why, what, who, where, when, how; and these six elements is situational context. The Chinese linguists study cultural context with the aim to help Chinese people learn English easily and efficiently.
However, college students usually ignore the reality environment—cultural context, which defines whether one uses language correctly when they study English. Therefore, they often misunderstand English and misuse it, sometimes, they even make serious culture errors. As a matter of fact, cultural context influences the understanding and using of language largely. Only do the college students recognize the importance of cultural context during their English learning, and learn English from cultural context, thus they can improve English comprehensively.
There are three parts in this thesis. Firstly, the thesis introduces the cultural context; secondly, the thesis focuses on the influence of cultural context upon English learning; thirdly, the thesis states countermeasures to these English learning problems caused by lack of cultural context.
