Abstract
Sons and Lovers is D.H.Lawrence’s first well-known novel. Within a short while of its being published, there is widespread agreement and admiration that the book is a masterpiece. Since its liberalization in China, there have been numerous related studies on this novel. And various approaches have been adopted in analyzing it: psychoanalysis, feminism, Marxism, ecologism, to name but a few. This dissertation focuses on several emotional relationship between man and woman in Sons and Lovers. With the combination of Lawrence’s own experience in love affairs, the paper is going to analyze the widely and commonly existing appurtenant position of women which is caused by the top-speed developing industrialization in Victorian society in Britain. And it falls into three parts as below.
PartⅠ, with the consideration of the atmosphere in the Morels, proves the truth that the formal family relationship has been deeply poisoned by the material industrialization and that there is a irreconcilable conflict between the working class and the middle class.
PartⅡ analyzes the friend-like affection between Paul and Miriam which lasts over a decade but ends up in vain, and demonstrates that severe religious morality results in the obstacle to natural love and the wild spreading of the subordination of women.
And Part Ⅲ, by observing and studying of the absolutely physical attachment between Paul and Clara, argues that the sexual relationship in Victorian Age has been extremely unbalanced, and this kind of out-of-balance lies in the sudden developing industrialization which has been separated from mental civilization.
In conclusion, the appurtenant position of women do exists in Victorian society, widely and rationally.
The author believes that this paper has made a useful attempt at the combination study of feminist and industrial criticism in the field of Lawrence study.
