abira for MDA and UML Developers
Developers of large-scale network-based applications and services use the Kabira infrastructure as a construction and deployment platform for software designed on the OMG Model Driven Architecture (OMG MDA?) and the Unified Modeling Language (UML?):
Let's skip the 'brief history of software development' and fast-forward to the present day. Application software is getting very large, with many commercial deployments exceeding a million lines of code (LOC). Companies are deploying products and service offerings across planet-wide networks. Sometimes, millions of users try to use a single network-based service at the same time, often with spectacularly poor results. This type of software is very difficult to design, and even harder to code for correct behavior. Worse yet, the programming team only gets to spend about 20% of its effort on the actual 'value added' part of the software and is stuck spending 80% of the time simply on plumbing, connections and transactional behavior. We have seen commercial network software projects that have planned for a team of 200+ developers working together for more than 18 months to deliver network-based applications. These projects usually fail, with massive delays, cost over runs and a resulting application suite that is 'locked in time' and impossible to change.
