Abstract

Thomas Hardy is one of the greatest English novelists in the latter half of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. His novels are famous for its intense tragic atmosphere. Tess of the d’Urbervilles belongs to his Novels of Character and Environment, and occupies the peak of his novels. This paper is going to make a tentative research on this novel. The analysis will develop on tragic consciousness and fatalism under the influence of famous ancient Greek tragedy
The tragic spirit and fatalism in Tess of the d’Urbervilles partly comes from the ancient Greek tragedy, and partly has Hardy’s own features. The illustration of them will be set out from four chapters in this paper-a brief introduction of ancient Greek tragedy, a brief introduction of tragedy of Tess, difference and similarities.
From the analysis, the differences between Oedipus Rex and Tess of the d’Urbervilles in tragic consciousness and fatalism will be represented and similarities will be displayed in the thesis.
