发动机是使车轮转动，从而驱动汽车的动力的来源。汽车发动机是一种内燃机，因为燃油（汽油）是在发动机内燃烧的。汽车的燃烧　在发动机燃烧　室中产生的高压力，推动活塞运动，并通过连杆传到发动机曲轴。曲轴转动，动力传动系统发动机的转动运动传给汽车车轮，从而使车轮及整车转动起来。
