电子计算机是一种能够高速而精确地进行各种数据处理的机器，这是人类生产和科学技术发展的产物，它的出现又有力地推动了生产力的发展，目前计算机已经应用到国民经济的各个领域，当代社会已离不开计算机。
现代的计算机都是大规模集成电路计算机，具有功能强，结构紧凑、系统可靠等特性、随着半导体技术的发展，能够在一个硅片上制作几百万个晶体管，于是出现了大规模集成电路的中央处理器—微处理器，以及大容量的半导体存储器，通用或专用输入/输出接口电路，包含多种类型I/O的综合外围电路，由这些大规模集成电路组成各种类型的微型计算机。
