Schweitzer工程试验室(SEL)的微机线路保护采用了带补偿的负序阻抗方向元件。在负序阻抗平面上，当发生不对称故障时，若实际测量负序阻抗Z2=U2/I2(式中U2，I2分别为输入继电器的故障电压、电流的负序分量)的点落在z2=Z2Fb(式中z2为测量负序阻抗在线路负序抗角方向的投影，Z2Fb为SEL继电器根据不同Z2计算出的正向动作阈值)曲线下侧时(z2≤Z2Fb)判别为正方向故障，落在z2=Z2Rb(式中Z2Rb为SEL继电器根据不同Z2计算出的反向动作阈值)曲线上侧时判别为反方向故障。这种负序方向元件的整定值和动作特性与装置运行的实际系统负序阻抗有关，因此在对采用这种负序方向元件的保护进行继电器检验、试验时，应注意试验方法，如果用检验传统继电器的试验方法，很可能会遇到一些问题。
