ABSTRACT
In the western ideologies there are lots of binary oppositions such as man/woman human/nature culture/nature and mind/body have subordinated woman nature and minority groups and subjected them to oppression and exploitation. This paper will interpret Doris Lessing’s latest work The Cleft from ecofeminism perspective and then tries to get the way to create an equal and harmonious world
In the field of western literature one of the most celebrated and a distinguished contemporary writer in English literature is Doris Lessing. based on the preeminence achievements Doris Lessing has got almost all the awards for literature in the European continent but the most major accomplishment is that she got the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2007 which also gave her world-wide reputation. The Cleft was published in 2007 which retells the history of human creation through an old contemplative Roman senator. Since its publication The Cleft has been always considered biblical fiction. The critics and readers of domestic and overseas have done some studies on it and their studies mainly focus on the aspects such as narrative strategy feminist theme and mythic feature of this novel. However up to now there are few critical papers or comments on this novel.
This thesis tries to use the criticism to disclose the wrongful control of women and nature by men and human beings under the patriarchal conceptual framework from ecofeminism perspective. This thesis deals with the theory of ecofeminism including the introduction of ecofeminism the main characteristics of ecofeminism and the ecofeminist literary criticism. This essay is devoted to the analysis of connections between women and nature from the aspects of symbol experience and status. is the analytical focus on dismantling and deconstruction of the patriarchal oppression in the novel. In The Cleft nature and women are not completely servile or totally submissive to men’s domination and oppression. This paper concludes that a harmonious world will be established under the condition in which patriarchy lose the power to dominate the nature and women.
