1. Introduction
People live in a language world so different nations speak different languages. People like use metaphors in their daily life whatever in English speaking countries or Chinese speaking countries. In the narrowest sense metaphor refers to a specific way of using the words and phrases of a language and in a broad sense it is applied to the process of conceptualizing itself leading to the aphorism “All thought is metaphorical” So metaphor is very useful and very important for everybody. In fact most of time people are not aware of that they are using metaphors. That is because metaphors are very common in our daily communication from scientific reports to newspaper both in spoken and written varieties. Animals are friends of human being from ancient times and among them horse is very important in English speaking countries and Chinese speaking countries. Languages of all nations contain a lot of words denoting horse and so do Chinese and English. There were many battles in ancient china horse was very important for a solider even for a country at that time. It shows that horse has become Chinese people’s friends from many years ago. United Kingdom is an island country. People used horse to pull cart and plow lands hundred years ago. Most of people have more chance to work with horse at that time so they are familiar with horse. Later horse-race became popular in United Kingdom. More and more people were crazy for this game and horse played the most important role in their life. With the social development words about horse gradually get their established connotations in all languages that is people associate their feelings and emotions even happenings and natural phenomena with horse which is thought to represent different characters like people or serve as omens. In this occasion horse has become a kind of symbol in people’s thinking and this symbol is reflected in metaphors. This paper will show some metaphors about horse in English and Chinese from the views of history usage as well as the impact of metaphor.
