Scarlett’s Deviation from the South
Abstract: Being one of the members of the Southern America, Scarlett O’Hara, the heroine of Gone With the Wind, was not the deviant of the South as people often regarded. Deep inside her heart, the South had always been her homeland; and as everyone else there, she possessed a deep complex for the South. She was willing and even expecting to be a gentlewoman and to live the idyllic life in the South. However, for that history is a one-way path that isnt within the hands of men, the Civil War that destroyed the entire foundation on which the whole South relied also demolished her fine dream and drove her onto the road of deviation. The violence of the war, the cruelty of the naked reality and the loss of the southern mens onstage role forced her to stand out and take up the heavy burdens of protecting and rebuilding her home as those southern men once did. Owing to the shift of her role from a woman to a man, changes were required for her to adapt to the changing new environment; and it were those exact changes that drove her farther and farther from the traditional South for which she was wholeheartedly longing. Therefore, her deviation from the South was the very result of those external factors caused by the Civil War; it was her unwilling yet unconscious choice that reflected the existent states of the little in the great times.
Key words: Southern consciousness, Family Interests, the Civil War, Crisis of Existence, Shift of Roles.
